Gemini is the easiest AI to justify if your business already lives in Gmail, Google Docs and Drive. It works inside those apps, and on the personal side it is the cheapest paid AI in rand, starting at R104.99 a month for Google AI Plus, with Google storage included. It also supports Afrikaans and Zulu.

Two things to know before you commit. On personal accounts, chats can be reviewed by people and kept for up to three years, so keep client and staff information out of a personal Gemini account. And Google Workspace, where the business protections apply, is billed in US dollars or euros in South Africa rather than rand, and its cheapest plan only brings Gemini to Gmail and Vids.

Is Gemini available in South Africa?

Yes. South Africa is on Google's list of countries where the Gemini app is available.
Gemini supports Afrikaans and Zulu as well as English.
Google AI Pro and Ultra are for people aged 18 and over.
Some Ultra features are only offered in selected countries, so check before paying for Ultra.

Paying for Gemini from South Africa

Personal plans: card through Google Play or Google One, or through the Apple App Store on iPhone, charged in rand.

On personal accounts, while Keep Activity is on, Google uses your Gemini activity to improve its models.
Chats selected for human review are kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity.
Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default. With Keep Activity off, or in a Temporary Chat, chats are still held for 72 hours.
In Google Workspace, your data is not used to train models outside your organisation or reviewed by people without permission, and Google's Cloud Data Processing Addendum applies.
Workspace data regions are the US or Europe only, so POPIA's cross-border rules (section 72) apply to personal information you put into it.
