Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant, built into Windows, Edge and the Microsoft 365 apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. For many South African businesses it is the AI they already half-own. Here is what each option costs and what you get.

Copilot's case in South Africa is less about being the cleverest assistant and more about where it lives. If your business already runs on Microsoft 365, it works inside the Word documents, Excel files, Outlook mail and Teams meetings you already have, under your existing tenant's data terms, and Microsoft commits to storing Copilot content at rest in its local region for South African tenants.

For individuals, Microsoft 365 Personal at R159 a month now bundles Copilot with the Office apps and 1 TB of storage, which is hard to beat. For businesses, the Copilot add-on is priced in US dollars excluding VAT on an annual commitment, so budget for exchange-rate moves. Tidy up who can see what in SharePoint first, because Copilot will find it.

Is Copilot available in South Africa?

Yes. Copilot and Microsoft 365, including the business Copilot plans, are sold in South Africa.
Microsoft has renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot to Microsoft Copilot, and Copilot Chat to Microsoft Copilot Chat. South African sales pages still use the older names, so expect both.
Copilot can use models from both OpenAI and Anthropic, chosen through a model picker in the business product.

Paying for Copilot from South Africa

Consumer plans: bought from the Microsoft Store in rand, monthly or yearly.
Business plans: credit or debit card; wire transfer against an invoice is possible in some cases. Prepaid cards are not accepted, and a card is needed to start a trial.
Many South African businesses buy Microsoft 365 through a local Microsoft partner, who can bill in rand.

POPIA and your data

The free consumer Copilot app can use your conversations to train Microsoft's models by default; you can opt out in Copilot's settings. Copilot used inside Microsoft 365 Personal and Family apps is excluded from training.
Business Copilot is covered by Microsoft's Data Protection Addendum and Product Terms, and your prompts and responses are not used to train its foundation models.
For tenants that signed up in South Africa, Microsoft commits to storing Copilot interaction content at rest in its local region. Microsoft runs South African datacentre regions.
Anthropic models are switched on by default for South African tenants but fall outside Microsoft's in-country processing commitments. Admins who need data to stay in-country should review that setting.
Copilot can surface anything a user already has permission to open, so tidy up SharePoint and Teams sharing before you roll it out.
