ChatGPT in South Africa: prices in rand, plans and privacy

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose AI assistant for writing, research, document analysis, images and voice. Unlike most AI tools, it bills South African users in rand. Here is what each plan costs, how to pay, and what to switch on or off before you use it for work.

ChatGPT is still the safest first subscription for most South African users, because it does the widest range of everyday work well: writing, summarising documents, analysing spreadsheets, images, voice and web research in one place. It is also one of the few big AI tools you can pay for in rand, which removes the exchange-rate surprise on your card statement.

Start with the free plan. Go at R149 a month is enough for most people who hit the free limits, and Plus at R399 makes sense once it is part of your daily work. The catch for businesses: personal plans train on your chats unless you switch that off, so anything involving client or employee personal information belongs on the Business plan, which comes with a data processing addendum.

In-app prices differ slightly (Plus is R399.99 in the South African App Store) Prices change often, so confirm on ChatGPT's own pricing page before you pay.

Is ChatGPT available in South Africa?

Yes. South Africa is on OpenAI's list of supported countries, and the Go, Plus, Pro and Business plans can all be bought here.
Rand is a supported billing currency on the web, so there is no exchange-rate surprise on your statement.
Web search and deep research work in South Africa.
Data residency options (for Enterprise and the API) cover regions such as the EU, UK, US, India and Singapore. There is no African region.

Paying for ChatGPT from South Africa

Credit or debit card on chatgpt.com for Go, Plus, Pro and Business.
Apple App Store or Google Play billing if you subscribe in the mobile app.
Invoicing, purchase orders and bank transfer are only available on a sales-led Enterprise contract, not on the self-serve Business plan.

POPIA and your data

Free, Go, Plus and Pro can use your chats to train OpenAI's models by default. Switch it off under Settings, Data controls, "Improve the model for everyone".
Temporary Chats are not used for training and are kept for up to 30 days.
Business and Enterprise do not train on your data by default, and OpenAI offers a data processing addendum (DPA) on those plans and the API.
Your data is processed outside South Africa. POPIA section 72 allows that only under set conditions, such as a binding agreement that gives adequate protection, which is one reason to use a plan with a DPA for client or employee information.
