Claude in South Africa: price, plans and privacy
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, known for long-document work, careful writing and coding. It is available in South Africa, but the web plans are priced in US dollars. Here is what it really costs, how to pay, and how its privacy settings work.
Claude is at its best when the work is long and needs care: reading a 60-page policy, drafting a client report or working through code. It writes in a more natural, less padded style than most rivals, it can search the web on every plan, and its privacy model is easy to explain: on personal plans you choose whether your chats train its models.
The drawback for South Africans is cost. On the web Claude is priced in US dollars, so the rand amount moves with the exchange rate, and buying through the App Store costs more. For teams, the Team plan (from two seats) is the sensible starting point, because Anthropic's data processing addendum is built into its commercial terms.

Is Claude available in South Africa?
- Yes. South Africa is on Anthropic's list of supported countries, and we found no features restricted for South African users.
- Web search works on every plan, including Free.
- Free users get Anthropic's Sonnet and Haiku models; Pro and Max add Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1.
- Regional data residency covers the EU, US, Canada and Asia-Pacific. There is no African region.
Paying for Claude from South Africa
- Card payment on claude.ai, charged in US dollars.
- Apple App Store or Google Play billing in the mobile app, charged in rand. Pro is R399.99 a month on the App Store, which is usually more than the dollar price converted.
- We could not confirm a PayPal or EFT option on the web checkout.
POPIA and your data
- On Free, Pro and Max you choose whether your chats are used to train Claude. Check the setting under Settings, Privacy.
- If you allow training, de-identified data can be kept for up to five years. If you do not, deleted chats leave Anthropic's back-end systems within 30 days.
- Incognito chats are never used for training.
- Team, Enterprise and API data is not used for training by default, and Anthropic's data processing addendum, with standard contractual clauses, is part of its commercial terms.
- Data is processed outside South Africa, so POPIA's rules on cross-border transfers (section 72) apply to any personal information you share.
